Haverfordwest County 2 Bangor City 0.

IT was a cracking week for the Bluebirds, who beat Porthmadog on Tuesday and Bangor on Saturday, scoring five goals in the process, with a brace apiece for Jack Christopher and Lee Hudgell.

They have now seen off the challenge of Porthmadog for tenth spot and have assured themselves a place in next season's FAW Premier Cup.

The win against Bangor was decisive and the Blues could easily have scored four or five. Throughout the first half they were really carving through the Citizens' defence, with front runners Chris O'Sullivan, Tim Hicks and Jack Christopher all running the visitors ragged.

One high spot came in the 13th minute when Sully' went on a searing break from the centre circle and fed Hicks out on the right. When the cross came in to the far post, it took two Bangor defenders to block Christopher and his shot.

The Blues defence seemed to have the measure of City, with Gareth Elliott asserting himself very strongly. And meanwhile, the Blues' midfield really did get a grip on the match with Phil Cattlin, playing perhaps his best game of the season, at the heart of almost every move.

Bangor did fashion the odd chance, two of which fell to their most dangerous player, the ex-Liverpool winger Mark Smyth, who twice rasped shots wide of Kendall's posts, but most of the action was at the other end.

A goal had to come and it came in the 26th minute when keeper Ian Havard botched a clearance and Lee Hudgell pounced for a fine opportunist goal.

Matters did even out somewhat in the second half but, although Bangor huffed and puffed, they rarely put Kendall under any real pressure and in fact we were two minutes into injury time before Kends' made his first real save, from Michael Walsh.

The Blues might have doubled their lead in the 68th minute, following an O'Sullivan corner, when Hudgell flighted a lovely ball back in from the far post, and Havard was pressed to clutch desperately to Christopher's header.

Sub Jaecek Gryka came on for quarter of an hour and ran at the Bangor defence with real energy. In the 86th minute he appeared to have been quite crudely taken out by the Citizens' big centre back Lee Webber, but contrived to squeeze the ball back across the penalty area for the alert Hudgell to pounce for a second time and complete a classy brace of goals, one with each foot.

Haverfordwest County: Kendall; Durham (Heal, 76), Wayne Jones, Gilderdale, Elliott, Cattlin, O'Sullivan, Hicks (Gryka, 74), Christopher, Coates, Hudgell (Briers, 88). Sub not used: Otten.
