HAYSCASTLE Horticulture and Pony Show celebrated its diamond anniversary on Saturday (August 15).

The village show was started in 1954 by a group of local gardening enthusiasts, with the aim of raising money to help with the cost of supplying mains water to part of the village.

It was held in Hayscastle School during a time when most households had a vegetable and flower garden, so there was intense interest in the competitions.

From these humble beginnings the show has transformed into a hotbed for young competitors to start their showing careers, be it in cooking, gardening or equestrian events.

The show committee is also proud to have supplied three Pembrokeshire County Show presidents over the years, namely George Davies, John Evans and Len Thomas, and thanks to the generosity of the many patrons and sponsors, it has supported many worthy causes, with the Wales Air Ambulance, British Heart Foundation, Paul Sartori, Farm Community Network and Withybush Hospital to name just a few.

The Stroke Association was the chosen charity for 2015.

Held at Plaindealings Fields, the modern show boasts more than 60 horse and pony showing and riding classes, together with professionally set up jumping classes and a fun filled gymkhana. In addition there is an exemption dog show, horticulture and vintage classes.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations continue with an anniversary dinner at Crug Glas on Saturday, October 10. All are welcome, with tickets available from committee members.
