THE official opening of an exhibition of artworks by renowned local artists Evan John and Bill Harrison took place at the Fishguard Bay Hotel on Friday, August 21

The opening was conducted by the former Mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick, Councillor Mike Lloyd, with both of the fore-mentioned artists present.

They were joined by Hugh Evans, organiser of the exhibition, family members of both artists, several members of Fishguard Arts Society, Richard Morse, assistant manager of the Fishguard Bay Hotel, and other invited guests.

Evan John is a local, self taught artist working in oils and pastels. After serving in the RAF from 1940-1943, he returned to Pembrokeshire and opened a photographic shop with his brother, known as The Studio Jon.

He had a painting accepted Royal Academy in 1954, unfortunately it was not hung.

Now retired, he is still trying to capture the atmosphere and light of Pembrokeshire in his sketches.

Bill Harrison also received no formal training as an artist. His talent is derived from books and practice.

He worked in the coal mine from 1942, starting just before his 14th birthday. He then spent 30 odd years at sea in both the Royal and Merchant Navies.

He mainly paints ship portraits in oil on canvas, and he has paintings hanging on HMS Ardent and HMS Victory and in the memorial section in Exeter Cathedral.

The exhibition at Fishguard Bay Hotel continues until and including Thursday, August 27 and is open between11am and 4pm.

Entry is free of charge with donations welcomed to the Catrin Vaughan Foundation.

Hugh Evans would like to offer special thanks to Evan John and family, Bill Harrison and family, Gaynor McMorrin and all at Fishguard Arts Society, Sigma Display, the volunteers who have kindly given of their time throughout the week, and all at the Fishguard Bay Hotel.
