A TWO day family-friendly community event with displays by firefighters from Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven drew the crowds to Pembroke Dock’s Heritage Centre last Friday and Saturday, August 21-22.

The event, a collaboration between Mid and West Wales Fire Service and the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust, was one of a series of events marking the 75th anniversary of the Luftwaffe’s wartime air raid on the oil tanks at Pembroke Dock.

The Heritage Centre exhibition saw demonstrations and displays by Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven firefighters, who braved the rain to entertain and educate the crowds, as well as an exhibition on the Admiralty tanks oil fire, and a talk by Derek Church.

There were also Young Fire Fighter drills and even an appearance by the fire service’s search & rescue dog, Celt.

Mid and West Wales Fire Authority Chairman Wyn Evans said: “It was really well attended, with the fire service working hand-in-hand with the Sunderland Trust; it was a very good two day event. The boys in Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven did a fantastic job.

“There were a number of displays including road traffic accidents, a smoke house and chip pan fires; education is the main thing, with speed in accidents and a need to check your vehicles are up to MoT spec, especially the tyres, and in a chip pan fire the last thing you should do is throw water on it; it’s all about education.”
