The Port of Milford Haven will fly the Red Ensign at its headquarters in Hakin, today (Thursday) to mark Merchant Navy Day.

The flag, which is the official ensign of the merchant navy, is being flown to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on merchant navy seafarers.

The flag will be raised at 10am as part of a nationwide campaign from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association.

Deputy harbourmaster, Steve Hardcastle, said that they were keen to get involved in the campaign to support those who work tirelessly to keep Britain trading.

“The Port of Milford Haven, the UK’s largest energy port, is responsible for the safe transportation of around 20% of the country’s fuel needs,” he said.

“As a port we felt it was important to show our appreciation to everyone who has links to the sea for their commitment and vital contribution to our lives.”

The port is also encouraging ships to sound their horns and whistles at 10am.

Seafarers UK president, HRH The Earl of Wessex, has endorsed the campaign, saying: “On this Merchant Navy Day, I very much hope you will support this campaign to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy.

“As an island nation the UK relies on merchant navy seafarers for 95% of our imports, including half the food we eat.
