HATE the idea of being stuck behind a desk all day? Want to make a difference to your community? Haverfordwest Fire Station is throwing open its doors to give local women the opportunity to see what life is like as a fire-fighter.

Part of a series of awareness days organised by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS), the event is designed to give an overview of the skills needed to do the job, and the scenarios that crop up, in a bid to recruit more women to the service.

Fire-fighter Hayley Smith said joining the service was a natural progression for her.

“It never actually occurred to me that as a woman anything would be different for me,” said Hayley.

“I don’t like sitting behind a desk all day, I need to get up and do things.

“This job changes on a daily basis and is exactly the kind of excitement that I was looking for.

“The job also feeds into a healthy and active lifestyle.

“Don’t get me wrong, you don’t have to be super-fit to be a fire-fighter, but the service promotes a healthy lifestyle that you can choose to be part of.

“Being part of the service has helped my confidence tremendously because you feel comfortable and strong as part of a team.

“We are like one big family. There’s a very strong sense of camaraderie at the station. It makes me feel at home.”

The event takes place on Monday, September 7. To register your interest phone 01267 242639 today.
