ROWING crews from Fishguard and Goodwick will be heading to London later this month to take part in the Great River Race.

The event, taking place on Saturday, September 12, is the equivalent of the London marathon for rowers. It attracts more than 330 crews from all around the world.

It features a spectacular boat race up the Thames, with the course starting at London’s docklands and finishing 21.6 miles later in Richmond.

Jemima Rowing Club is entering three crews this year: a men’s team, a mixed team and an over 60’s team. The rules of the race state that each boat has to carry a passenger, so 16 local rowers will take part.

As well as coming back with some silverware, the crews are hoping to raise money for two charities: Reverse Retts and Cancer Research UK.

Rett syndrome affects one in 12,000 children yet few people have heard of it. It is a genetic disorder that can cause severe mental and physical disability. Research shows that those with Rett do not have brain damage, they know and understand much more than their bodies allow them to show.

Chairwoman Candy Tamsett, who will be rowing in the mixed team said: “We first learned about Rett Syndrome because one of our coxes, James Griffiths, has two daughters who both have this condition. We wanted to do something to support James and his family and he suggested raising money for Reverse Rett.

“Friends and family can donate by contacting me or any of our rowers who have sponsorship forms, or by visiting our just giving pages. Forms are also available in the Cafe on the Quay or the Yacht Club. I’d also like to thank those who have already made donations.”
