THREE north Pembrokeshire schools are set to close as the long-awaited plans to re-organise education in Fishguard and St Davids are voted on by councillors next week.

Papers released ahead of Thursday’s extraordinary meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council details the latest proposals for Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol Dewi Sant, Ysgol Bro Dewi, Solva CP and Ysgol Croesgoch.

The papers show a recommendation that Ysgol Dewi Sant, Ysgol Bro Dewi and Solva CP schools be closed in order to establish a new 3-16 Church in Wales Voluntary Aided or Voluntary Controlled School.

The report states that where the new school would be sited is yet to be resolved, but the Solva CP site would be declared surplus to requirement.

As discussions have commenced with the Governing Body of Ysgol Croesgoch in relation to the school becoming Welsh medium, it would not be part of the new planned 3-16 school.

Under the recommendations Ysgol Bro Gwaun would be designated as a 11-16 school with extra Additional Learning Needs provision for pupils with complex learning needs.

Sixth form provision for students from Bro Gwaun, and the new 3-16 school would be provided by a sixth form centre at Pembrokeshire College.

The report states that, if councillors agree to the recommendations, further consultation would be carried out.

A business case to access 21st Century Schools funding will then need to be prepared.

The extraordinary meeting takes place at County Hall on Thursday at 10am and is open to the public.
