Full plans and costings for Withybush’s improved cancer services should be in place by the end of this year.

An update on the refurbishment of the hospital’s Chemotherapy Day Unit and Ward 10 will be discussed by health chiefs at Hywel Dda University Health Board’s (UHB) meeting in Llanelli today (Thursday).

A report by Joe Teape, the UHB’s deputy chief executive and director of operations and fundraising manager, Nicola Llewelyn, will be considered by the UHB.

The report lays out the background to the project and a recently agreed governance structure but it does not give any costings for work on either ward.

“Draft plans and estimated costs have been drawn up for certain elements of the project following initial discussion in 2014,” reads the report.

“These plans and costings are however subject to change following the recommendations of the Withybush Implementation Group.”

The report says that in total £642,000 of funding is in place for the CDU: “Much of the funding for the chemotherapy day unit is in place,” it says. Adam’s Bucketful of Hope charity has committed £145,000, Withybush Hospital Cancer Day Unit Appeal has agreed to give £197,000 and the UHB has earmarked £300,000 from its Pembrokeshire Cancer Services charitable fund.

The UHB has also committed £250,000 from the charitable fund towards the refurbishment and upgrade of Ward 10.

The implementation group is due to provide a detailed plan outlining their recommendations on the most appropriate location for the CDU and Ward 10 by mid October.

During the month of November staff and stakeholders will be consulted with a final agreement on the location of the services expected by early December.

Full plans and costings are scheduled to be drawn up by the end of December, with plans to meet any shortfall in funding developed and implemented in early January 2016.
