Kilgetty

THE funeral took place on Thursday August 26 at St Michaels and All Angels Church, Cosheston of Philip ‘Phil’ Mark Yates who tragically passed away at his family home in Ryelands Lane, Kilgetty on August 14.

Philip grew up and went to primary school in St Florence.

He moved to Kilgetty with his family at the age of 12 years old. He attended Ysgol Greenhill, Tenby followed by an Electrical Engineering Course at Aberporth/Coleg Ceredigion. He played mini rugby for Tenby and then changed to football where he again played for Tenby Under 9s, 12s and Kilgetty under 15s.

After leaving Greenhill, Philip enjoyed a variety of jobs and always prided himself that he could turn his hand to anything. He worked at the Co-op in Kilgetty and the Begelly Arms whilst still at school and then worked at Mick Jones Timber/Broadoak Timber, The Hean, Saundersfoot, The Imperial Hotel, Tenby and then The Prince of Wales Hotel, Berkley, Gloucestershire as bar manager.

He also became an extra ‘longbow man’ in the 2010 Ridley Scott production of ‘Robin Hood’ starring Russell Crowe and filmed on Freshwater West. Until earlier this year, he worked for Bilfinger on a platform offshore as a storeman.

Phil was a keen vehicle enthusiast and loved being around all types of vehicles.

He enjoyed the challenge of a new project and he was also in his element helping anyone out with theirs. Rallying was one of his greatest passions. He loved going to watch, marshal and even co-drove. He also enthusiastically followed Wales at rugby and he was a fan of Arsenal from an early age.

Phil was a kind and considerate friend who would help anyone and who also revelled in a road trip and the company of his many friends who have lots of happy and memorable stories to recall.

Philip was a devoted Dad to Ffion (Fifi) whom he adored and loved dearly, a greatly loved son of Alison and Richard, a truly loved brother and brother-in-law to Michelle and Nigel, Diana and Ashley, a much loved uncle to Rachel and Nathan, a much loved nephew to Laine and Neil, Debbie and David, and loved cousin to Joe, Jemma, Jade, Zoe and Ben.

The Rev Carolyn Wood officiated at the church service and the funeral was arranged by E C Thomas and Son both of whom carried out their duties with great compassion and care.

The bearers at the church were Peter Roberts, Nick Reynolds, Teifion Smith, Dan Richards, Kye Bradbury and Leighton Harries.

The eulogy was read by Phil’s friend Dan Richards and the poem ‘I’m Free’ was read by his eldest sister Michelle.

There were family flowers only.

Mr B G Lewis

Formerly of Haverfordwest

MR Brian George Lewis of St Johns Crescent, Whitchurch, Cardiff passed away at The Court Nursing Home, St Fagans, Cardiff on September 2. He was 79.

Brian was the only son of Mr and Mrs Edgar Lewis of High Street, Haverfordwest and was educated at Fenton Infants, Barn Street Primary School and Haverfordwest Grammar School. He married Cynthia (daughter of Mr Fred Thomas, City Road, Haverfordwest) in 1951 at Tabernacle Congregational Chapel, Haverfordwest in 1959 and their son Stephen was born in 1961.

The family lived at Merlins Hill prior to moving to Cardiff in 1973, when Brian took up his post in St Hilary.

As a native of Haverfordwest, he worked at Lees and Thomas, auctioneers, Haverfordwest; Briggs Tyre Co, Haverfordwest; the county office, Haverfordwest, and also at television transmitting stations at Preseli Pembs and also St Hilary, Cowbridge, Cardiff, where he retired from in 1996.

He served his national service in the RAF between 1954 and 1956.

He was an officer with the air training corps in Haverfordwest until moving to Cardiff in 1973.

He was baptised in Bethesda Chapel, Haverfordwest and was a member of Bethel Baptist Chapel in Whitchurch.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Cynthia (wife); Stephen and Sally (son and daughter-inlaw); Julian (grandson); Beryl Warlow (sister); David and Martin Warlow (nephews); Tom Warlow (great nephew).

The service was held at Bethel Baptist Chapel in Whitchurch, Cardiff followed by cremation at Thornhill Crematorium.

It was officiated by Rev Jonathan Vaughan Davies.

Mr H Phillips

Croesgoch

HERBERT (Bertie) Phillips, aged 80, of Croesgoch, passed away peacefully at Morriston Hospital on May 14 following a short illness.

Bertie was born in Abereiddy in 1934, the only son of Lloyd and Eleanor Phillips.

As a result of the Great Storm of 1938 the family relocated to Treferfyn before later moving back to the reconstructed cottages at Cyffredyn. Bertie attended Llanrhian school until the age of 14 before joining his father in the family fishing business. At age of 18 he completed his National Service with the Royal Artillery, spending two years in Germany.

Bertie married Jean in 1962 and in 1967 they and their three sons moved into Mor Awelon, which he built, and which was to be the family home for the rest of his life.

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Bertie built a successful and long career as a lobster and crab fisherman and during the winter months as a building labourer. Bertie was highly respected for his attention to detail, high work ethic, skill and determination to get the job done. These are traits that he passed onto his sons and grandchildren and was always very proud of their accomplishments.

He loved his life at Mor- Awelon, a place where he could survey the spectacular north Pembrokeshire coast line and meet and greet his many friends and acquaintances.

A large gathering attended the funeral service at Berea Chapel followed by interment in the chapel cemetery, officiated by Reverend Geraint Morse and assisted by Mr John Evans.

The organist was Mrs Ann Thomas.

The principal mourners were Jean (wife); Andrew and Sue, Rowland and Sally, Geraint and Kate (sons and daughters-in-law); Amy and Sion, Carys, Tesni, Joseff, Hywel and Hannah (grandchildren and partners); Mrs. Laurine Davies, Mrs.

Lena Thomas (sisters); Ann Davies, Philip Davies, Gareth and Cath Davies, Nigel Thomas (nieces and nephews); and many relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Lloyd Phillips and Ben Phillips (grandsons), Mr. Henry Thomas (brother-in-law), and Mrs Sian Thomas were unable to attend.

The wreath bearer was Mr Frankie George and bearers were Philip, Gareth, Nigel, Sion, Hywel and Joseff.

There were family flowers only, but charitable donations in lieu of flowers were kindly received by Mr. David Price on behalf of Wales Air Ambulance and ITU Morriston Hospital.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Paul Jenkins and Sons of Fishguard.

 

Mr G L Griffiths

Pembroke

MR Gwilym Lloyd Griffiths of South Meadows, Pembroke passed away at Withybush Hospital on August 26.

He was 79.

Originally from Glanrhyd, North Pembrokeshire, he was a merchant seaman in the Navy, a rigger, BR train crew supervisor in Buxton, Derbyshire.

His main interests were his family, walking, reading, gardening and TV.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are Betty (wife); Joanne (daughter); Paul (son-in-law); Steven (son); Alison (daughter-inlaw); Thomisin, Catherine, Jemma (granddaughters); Ross (grandson); Yvette Jenkins (elder sister); May Thomas (sister-in-law).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by David Thomas. The bearers were Ross, Jemma, Steven (son), Thomisin, Catherine and Paul (son-in-law).

Donations in lieu of flowers for Ashdale Nursing Home, Pembroke may be sent to E C Thomas and Son, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth SA67 8QH who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

 

Mrs D Williams

Pembroke Dock

ON August 18 at Ward 10 Withybush Hospital Mrs Denise Williams, surrounded by her family, passed away peacefully at the age of 65.

Denise Hudd grew up in Cogan Penarth the eldest of five children. After leaving school she attended college at Barry to train as a short hand typist.

There in 1965 she met Chris.

They married in 1970 and moved first to Pembroke and then Pembroke Dock.

Denise gave up her typists job at Pembroke Power Station to start a family. She returned to work as the children grew older working part time at their school. She eventually became a Learning Support Assistant, a job she really loved, first at Albion Square School and then moving to Pennar Juniors when Albion Square closed.

She was obliged to retire on health grounds in 2009 having taught some of her grand children in the meantime.

She really enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren reading, baking and gardening.

For ten years until it was disbanded in 1994 both Denise and Chris were active with the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service which met in the old Dockyard.

Denise had been an active member of the Quins Ladies Committee.

She also enjoyed Line Dancing and card making. Lately she had also become a member of the Townswomen Guild. In all these activities she made enduring friendships.

After becoming ill she found great comfort and friendship as a member of the Pembrokeshire Cancer Support group.

The service at St Johns Church, Pembroke Dock was officiated by the Reverend Caroline Mansell who also delivered a heartfelt eulogy, to the full church.

The principal mourners were husband Chris; parents Fred and Joan Hudd; children Stephen, Joanne and Melanie, their spouses Michelle, Mark and Justin; grandchildren Kristy, Jacob, Jack, Jodee, Georgia and Fred and great grandson Preston. Also sisters Pam, Carole and Jeanette with their spouses Robert, John and Jon; father-in-law Fred Williams; brother-in-law Mike and sister-in-law Jenny and husband Phil, along with many nephews and nieces.

Unable to attend were brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Bobbie Hudd of Perth, Western Australia.

The bearers were son Stephen, sons-in-law Mark and Justin, brother-in-law Robert, grandsons Jacob and Jack.

The interment was at Llanion Cemetery.
