BSE, or mad cow disease, has been identified in the carcass of a dead cow at a Welsh farm, the Welsh Government has said.

Meat from the animal did not enter the human food chain, and authorities said there had been no risk to human health.

Where the farm is in Wales has not been revealed.

One case of the disease was confirmed in Wales in 2013 along with two others in the rest of the UK. There was a single case in the UK in 2014.

There have been no other reported BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) cases in the UK this year.

Rebecca Evans, Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, said: "Identification of this case demonstrates that the controls we have in place are working well."

Although the disease is not transmitted directly from animal to animal, the dead cow's cohorts, including offspring, had been traced, and would be destroyed in line with EU rules.
