A FATHER from Milford Haven who was told to ‘lose weight or lose his job’ has helped raise almost £600 for a charity that offers comfort, care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families.

Last November, weighing in at just over 16 stone, 55-year-old John Smith - better known as 'Harpo' to his friends - decided to quit the couch and lace up his trainers, in a bid to get fit and lose weight.

Having lost almost four stone so far, he decided to take part in Ty Hafan’s 5k ‘Rainbow Run’ on Pendine Sands on Saturday, September 26.

The annual event saw hundreds of fundraisers get covered in multi-colour powder paints as they walked, jogged or ran down the beach.

Accompanying John was his daughter Debbie, aged 30, who said she was "unbelievably proud" of what her father has overcome and achieved in the last year.

“This hasn't been easy for him yet he has never given up," said Debbie.

“His determination, motivation and strength have been inspirational not only to myself but to others."

Debbie said her dad felt 'awesome' when he crossed the line.

"It was an amazing feeling to have completed the run and to have raised money for such a good cause," she said.

"The run has also given my dad great motivation to keep training.

"We had great support from family and friends who came along to cheers us on, and complete strangers who also encouraged us to keep going.

"It was overwhelming to see so many people there."

She added: "We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us. To date, we have raised £581.50 for Ty Hafan."
