SEA kayakers gathered in Goodwick recently to raise money for two worthy charities.
The 2015 West Wales Sea Kayak Meet was an opportunity for experienced kayakers to enjoy the best sea kayaking the Pembrokeshire coast has to offer, while catching up with friends old and new.
Each kayaker raised money to take part in the two day event, and together they were able to raise £2,418 which will be divided equally between the RNLI and the Wales Air Ambulance.
The annual event was hosted by Mayberry Kayaking, and was based at The Phoenix Centre, Goodwick. Kayakers enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Beaches Diner before taking to the water.
Mayberry Kayaking owner, Mike Mayberry said: “A big thank you to everyone who came and made this weekend a success, particularly those who led trips. Thanks again, it is really all of you who make the event successful.”
Organiser Mark Rainsley added: “This weekend had unusually big tides and good weather was forecast, so we wanted to use this opportunity to do something which we don’t think has been done before, paddling to the two remotest points in Wales in one trip.
“The plan was to paddle out to the Smalls Lighthouse, 20 miles offshore. This has only been visited by kayak a couple of times, for obvious reasons. We planned to visit Grassholm Island on the way back, making for at least nine hours in our kayaks riding Pembrokeshire’s epic tidal flows.”
