It may only be a small village but its community has created a 25 acre park with 8,000 trees, two miles of paths, 22 allotments, a pond and a play park.

Now the East Williamston Jubilee Park and Nature Trail has been nominated for a national award as one of the UK’s Best Parks.

Local MP Simon Hart visited the park to add his support to their bid to be named the Best Park in Wales by the charity Fields in Trust.

He said: “I am absolutely amazed by what the Friends of Jubilee Park have achieved here – I thought it would be a small play park like you would normally find in a little village, but this is more like a country park!

“There’s miles of footpaths through woodland and different habitats, a substantial play park for children, allotments, a hay meadow, adventure trail; it’s a really outstanding place and the word “park” just doesn’t do it justice.”

Ian Wilkinson, secretary to the Friends of Jubilee Park, explained how the park began. “We had a small common area in the middle of the village which had become a bit of a dumping ground and we got a grant to do it up in the Golden Jubilee year.”

The Jubilee Park grew from there and various grants and donations have helped to add more land and planting over the last 13 years.

The Park now extends to 25 acres having just had an eight-acre addition – half of the £25,000 price for the new land was raised by donations from the village.

The Countryside Management course at Pembrokeshire College helps out with some of the work and the community council pays for the grass mowing. But the bulk of the work is done by a working group of up to 20 local residents who meet on the first Saturday of every month.

The Fields in Trust charity, organisers of the competition said: “Our new award category - UK's Best Park, as voted by YOU! - provides an opportunity to give your favourite local green space, whether that's a park, sports field, playground or something else entirely, the recognition it deserves.

Mr Hart added: “I really hope that the whole of Pembrokeshire gets behind East Williamston and its wonderful park. They are a bit of a minnow in the competition as the other parks nominated include Brynmill Park in Swansea and Bute Park in Cardiff but they are so deserving.

Please take one minute to go to www.fieldsintrust.org/bestpark/nominations and give them your vote.”
