A PEMBROKE school which was struck by vandals has been handed a cash boost to repair the damage.

Six picnic benches were destroyed and a bird hide, which had been built by pupils, was damaged in an attack on Golden Grove School-Ysgol Gelli Aur recently.

Now Persimmon Homes West Wales has donated £900 to the school for repairs.

The school’s Family Link Officer David Perry, who made the application for funding, said: “During the summer holiday we suffered acts of vandalism. Six picnic benches used by our early years pupils were smashed up, a newly-built bird hide had panels removed and roof tiles were taken off a round house.

“With this generous donation from Persimmon we’ll be able to buy timber and fixings to remake benches with our pupils. We’re also looking to buy child-sized safety equipment.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Persimmon.”

Parents have offered to step in to help with the work.

The donation comes as part of Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme. Each month each regional division of the business hands out up to £2,000 - £1,000 each to two good causes.

Sharon Robinson, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “It’s shocking that someone would break into a school and cause damage like this.

“We wanted to help and our Community Champions scheme has allowed us to do just that.

“We hope that the children enjoy making and using their new facilities.

“We’d urge any charities and groups which need funding to visit www.persimmonhomes.com/charity for information.”

Persimmon Homes currently has three and four bedroom houses for sale in Pembroke at its Martello Park development, where prices start at £139,995.
