A VILLAGE'S attempt to break the UK record for the number of consecutive rainy days is over.

No rainfall was recorded in Eglwyswrw yesterday, as temperatures plummeted to below freezing.

The village and its 700 residents had endured downpours every day since October 24, and after media attention from as far away as Australia, they were hoping the showers would continue until next Tuesday to break the record.

The current holder is the Scottish island of Islay, where it rained for 89 consecutive days in 1923.

Locals say the rainfall has been of biblical proportions, with businesses being affected and farmers forced to bring in their animals.

But despite there being no watering hole to drown their sorrows, they had learned to laugh at their situation.

Brian Llewelyn, who runs Brian Llewelyn A'i Ferched Country Stores, said there was no rain yesterday (Tuesday), with temperatures falling to -4 degrees.

“It’s nice and sunny here today,” he said.

“We’ll just have to find something else to moan about now.”
