The former head teacher of Eglwyswrw Community Primary School has today been struck off by the Education Workforce Council for fiddling pupils’ test results.

The council’s Fitness to Practise Committee deemed Mrs Shan Harries’s behaviour in improving National Test Results, and instructing another member of staff to do the same, “unacceptable”.

The committee found that this had happened in both May 2013 and June 2014.

The fitness to practise committee also heard that that Mrs Harries improved Teaching Assessment levels of Year 2 and Year 6 pupils around May 2014.

The committee found that she had manipulated the National Test results so that pupils received better test results and that these actions amounted to acting dishonestly.

Parents of the 126 children at Ysgol Gynradd Eglwyswrw received a letter last May informing them that Mrs Shan Harries, had been sacked due to a breach in discipline.

Mrs Harries was suspended from the school in June 2014. Subsequently an independent investigation was commissioned by Pembrokeshire County Council. Police were not involved in the investigation and Mrs Harries was removed from her position at its conclusion.

In the letter to parents, chairman of governors, Alwyn Evans assured them that there was no evidence of any risk to children’s safety during Mrs Harries’ time as headteacher.

“This has been a difficult period for Mrs Harries, staff and members of the governing body,” he wrote.

“It is hoped that all concerned can now move forward in a positive manner in the best interests of the pupils at the school.”

In May Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed that Mrs Harries’ contract had been terminated as a result of a breach in discipline rather than child protection issues.

Mrs Harries has now been removed indefinitely from the Register of Education Practitioners by the Fitness to Practise Committee.

She cannot apply to be restored to the register for at least two years. If she does not make a successful application for readmission after 28th January 2018, she will remain prohibited indefinitely.

Mrs Harries has the right to appeal to the High Court within 28 days.
