PEMBROKE Dock’s B&Q store is to close in the 2016-17 financial year, a spokeswoman for the company has said.

In March 2015, Kingfisher, the company that owns B&Q, revealed it was to undergo a major restructuring.

As a result, it would be closing 60 stores across the UK in the next two years, it said.

Back in October 2015 it was announced the Pembroke Dock store in London Road would be one of those facing closure.

More recently, last month it was announced that discount shoe retailer Brantano, which has a branch on the same London Road estate, has gone into administration.

Accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been appointed administrator, and has said the firm will continue to trade normally while it seeks a buyer to secure the business' future.

Back in October, Pembroke Dock Mayor Peter Kraus said: “This is going to be huge loss to the town, it’s the loss of jobs again in the area; we’ve lost enough shops in the town centre and to lose that one, which is a massive property, is devastating; what’s going to happen next?

“We’re going to have an empty building, how long will it be empty for?

“From my point of view it’s a sad loss, it really is. Let’s hope it can be resolved and another company can be moved in.

“It’s going to be a huge loss to the town itself; B&Q have been very, very good with their support of charity, they’ve helped me no end, especially down Hobbs Point.”

A B&Q spokesperson commented: “We have let colleagues at our Pembroke Dock store know that their store is one of those planned for closure next financial year (2016/17).

“Our focus for the coming months is on redeploying as many colleagues as we can within B&Q and the Kingfisher Group.”
