A SAXOPHONIST and a singer from Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych are to represent Pembrokeshire in the Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition.

Talfan Jenkins and Esyllt Thomas entered the area contest at the Nant-y-ffin, Llandissilio last Tuesday, fresh from their success in the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland’s annual Young Musician event.

They will now go on to the District 1150 (South Wales) finals.

The Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland’s competition was held at Bethesda Chapel, Narberth and featured five vocalists and four instrumentalists.

Singers were sisters Bronwen Pickett and Megan Prickett, both pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Whitland, together with Preseli pupils Eslyllt Thomas, Nia James and Nia Lloyd.

Instrumentalists were flautist Cerys Jones. Pianist Jasmine Mear and violinist Liam Russell, all from Dyffryn Taf and saxophonist Talfan Jenkins from Preseli.

The judges were Rose Bowen and Norma Ridout, who commented on the very high standard of each performance.

They added that it had been a “real joy” to hear such a varied instrumental programme.

Esyllt performed Wohin?’by Schubert and Lle cede di by Handel, while Talfan played Witch Hunt by Schultheiss followed by Sonata, 1st Movement, by Woods.

The MC for the evening was Rotarian Barbara Rumbold who, in her closing thanks to everyone, commented on the huge talent of the younger generation and what a privilege it was to hear them perform.
