STONE from the old quarryman cottages in Abereiddy has been saved from the grasp of the sea, thanks to a group of hard-working youngsters.

The National Trust is leading a project to relocate the stone from the edge of the storm-damaged beach to the old manager’s cottage further up the coast, so it may be re-used in the future.

The National Trust was assisted in moving the stone by youngsters on The Prince’s Trust Team Programme.

The 12-week personal development programme, which offers youngsters the chance to gain new skills and qualifications, closed down in Pembrokeshire in 2014 due to funding cuts, but has been back up and running at Pembrokeshire College since September.

Team leader Lee Rees explained the 12 week course is for youngsters who have, for a variety of reasons, disengaged with education. “Our aim is to get them back onto college courses,” he said.

“The team is getting on really well. They don’t moan, they just get on with the task given to them.”

National Trust coastal ranger Phil Sadler was also full of praise for the youngsters.

“The team are doing a grand job,” he said.

“It’s heavy work moving the stone, but they’re working really well together.”

Team member, Chloe Tysoe,17, said: “The course is good. It’s tiring at times but you’ve just got to push through.

“After the course I want to become a mechanic. I found a really nice work placement and hopefully I can get an apprenticeship after that.”
