Milford Haven Port Authority came to the rescue of a sick sailor yesterday, as they took a crew member from HMS Exeter to an awaiting ambulance.

The warship was passing the Haven and diverted her passage in order to convey the crewman, who had a foot infection, to shore.

The port authority pilot's boat was in the area and, at the request of coastguard operations room, transferred the seaman from the Exeter to the port authority jetty. An awaiting ambulance then took him to Withybush Hospital.

"The pilot's boat happened to be at sea when we got a call from the coastguard and we were happy to assist," said Milford Haven harbour master Mark Andrews
