Fishguard welcomed its new mayor and deputy at the official mayor making ceremony last week.

Cllr Mike Mayberry has served on the council since 2012. He moved to Goodwick 20 years ago after holidaying in the area in his younger days.

He established Mayberry Kayaking in 2006 after spending four years working with young people with challenging behaviour.

Mike has been very active in the Fishguard Sea Cadet Unit where, over a ten year period, he helped cadets win many gold medals at national canoeing competitions over 10 years.

He also organises a bi-annual charity sea kayak event with the proceeds split between the RNLI and the Wales Air Ambulance.

"It's an honour to have been chosen as mayor," said Cllr Mayberry. "It's all a bit of a whirlwind at the moment.

"I'm looking forward to meeting people from Fishguard, Goodwick and further afield over the next year as well as going to the town's many festivals.

"It's going to be a very positive year for Fishguard and Goodwick, as is next year when we will be celebrating 220 years since the last invasion of Britain."

Cllr Mayberry paid tribute to his predecessor, Cllr Richard Grosvenor.

"I've learn a lot from him, he's done a great job," he said. "I'm also looking forward to working with my deputy Cllr Janet Wyer."

Cllr Wyer is a trade union stalwart who has worked for the County Council for the last 27 years, first as a swimming teacher and then as a senior trade union officer.

"I am proud to have found myself in a position to help support residents and local businesses in developing Fishguard & Goodwick through the challenges ahead," she said. "In order to maintain the pride we have in our towns for future generations and to help keep our towns shining brightly on the map."
