Dozens of Celtic longboats and their crews will take to the waters of Fishguard Bay this Sunday, May 15, for an annual regatta hosted by the Fishguard and Goodwick Jemima Rowing Club.

Up to 30 boats and 150 rowers, from clubs from Beaumaris to Wisemans Bridge, are expected to turn up to compete in the Welsh Sea Rowing Association league races.

The decision whether to proceed with the races will take place at 8am. Rowers should start arriving in Lower Town from 10.00am, with the first race due to start (weather permitting) at 1pm.

The expected race order is men, ladies, juniors and novices finishing with mixed crews.

Races will start from Goodwick beach and head towards Dinas Head before turning back for the finish line in Lower Town. Good places to watch the event will be Goodwick beach and breakwater, Pen Yr Aber, the old fort and Lower Town.

The Fishguard super veteran mixed team won the league trophy last year so will be hoping to repeat their success this year. The Fishguard men’s team have been training throughout the winter months and are hoping they can pick up a trophy as well.

Results and trophies will be presented in the yacht club on the day.

Trophies in memory of the late Bill Fowler will be presented to the fastest men’s veterans crew and the best overall junior crew. Mr Fowler was a Fishguard history teacher and rowing veteran who encouraged many youngsters to get involved in the sport.
