Knits and notes are brightening up St Davids this week; the city has been yarn bombed as part of the St. Davids Cathedral Festival.

The festival which has been responsible for bringing classical music to the heart of west Wales for over 35 years, opens tomorrow (Friday) and runs until Saturday, June 4.

It features a feast of both classical and contemporary music concerts under the artistic direction of Oliver Waterer, the Cathedral’s organist and master of the choristers.

The idea to combine crochet and crotchets came from Geraldine Davies and her husband Arwel, who is the festival’s chairman.

Since January, around 50 pieces have been created by local people and groups, including Ysgol Bro Dewi, Merched Y Wawr, the WI, local churches and the Haverfordwest yarn bombers.

The woolly wonders were put up on Sunday and Monday night and will festoon the town, and one of the cathedral chapels, for the duration of the festival.

“It was amazing how many people stopped and said how great it looked when we were putting them up last night,” said Geraldine. “We’ve had a brilliant response so far.

Geraldine added that the support of the Haverfordwest yarn bombers, who have shared their purls of wisdom, had been invaluable.

“”We probably wouldn’t have done it if it hadn’t been for them, they have been so helpful,” she said. “They gave us ideas of what could be done where, created a piece for us and helped us put it all up.”

The yarn bombing was initially intended to be a one off but the initial positive reaction has encouraged Geraldine and her team to knit to say no to an encore next year.

“After the public response last night we might do it again next year,” she said. “At least we’ll have less knitting to do.”
