Fishguard's new mayor, Cllr Mike Mayberry, has been arrested for alleged drug-driving just 15 days after he took on the chains of office.

Cllr Mayberry became mayor on May 5 this year. The Western Telegraph understands that his car was stopped on May 18 and he was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs.

One of Fishguard's youngest mayors, Cllr Mayberry, moved to Goodwick 20 years ago after holidaying in the area in his younger days. He has served on the council since 2012.

He established Mayberry Kayaking in 2006 and the company has gone on to win awards and be highly commended for its work.

Before this Cllr Mayberry spent four years working with young people with challenging behaviour.

He also spent a decade heavily involved with Fishguard Sea Cadet Unit where, he helped many youngsters win gold medals on a national level.

He organises a biennial charity sea kayak event with the proceeds split between the RNLI and the Wales Air Ambulance. He is also planning to launch the first annual Pembrokeshire Sea Kayak Festival this October.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that no charges have yet been made:

"A 40-year-old man from the Fishguard area was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs on Wednesday, May 18," said a police spokesman.

"He has been bailed pending further police enquiries."
