Things are hotting up for this weekend’s Welsh Dragonboat Championships at Llysyfran.

Eighteen teams are to take part in the contest on Sunday (May 29), where alongside the excitement of the dragon boats racing, paddling to the rhythmic beat of the drums, there will be children’s entertainment, a licensed bar and refreshments.

Racing gets underway at 10am.

This will be the third time that Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club has staged the championships, which have quickly established themselves as a key event on the Pembrokeshire calendar.

The first year's champions were Ysgol Dyffryn Taf boys team, while last year it was the Hill Billies. Who will it be this year?

Said race control co-ordinator Carol Lewis: "Competition is fierce, and the final always ends up being a photo-finish.It's really a nail-biting time until the winners are announced."

Money raised by the event will to help provide support for young people with the development of their life skills and additional learning.

Proceeds will go to the Princes Trust Cymru and the Additional Learning departments of Ysgyl Dyffryn Taf, Whitland and Ysgol y Preseli, Crymych, as well as around eight local primary schools and support groups.

The championships have raised £20,000 for Welsh-based charities and good causes in their first two years alone.
