Pembrokeshire County Council has urged anybody who is approached for payment for using its benches to contact the police immediately.

The advice comes following reports that visitors to Goodwick’s Parrog have been approached by a man masquerading as a council employee and charging elderly people 50p to sit on the benches overlooking the sea.

It is believed that some of his victims have been taken in by the scam and have handed over their cash.

“The council does not charge for the use of our benches,” said a spokesman for the authority.

“If anyone having a sit down on any of our benches is approached by someone purporting to be collecting money on behalf of the council, it is recommended that they politely decline to pay and report the matter to the police with a description of the incident and the person involved.”
