A descendent of Fishguard's famous Jemima Nicholas has raised over £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by cycling non-stop from Fishguard to Marble Arch in under 20 hours.

Rhidian Thomas set off from Jemima's memorial on Fishguard Square in the early hours of Saturday, June 25.

He definitely harnessed his great x 8 grandmother's fighting spirit, completing the 275 mile ride in 19 hours 50 minutes and raising £2,230.

"It was very wet most of the way and I was cursing the hills, the rain and the room Welsh drivers give to cyclists," he said.

"It was tough but worth it, money has been raised for a great cause."

Rhidian completed the ride, which is further than London to Paris, unaccompanied and unsupported and averaged a speed of 13.9 mph, including stops, arriving in London at 2.30am on Sunday.

He was waved off from Fishguard by his sister Rhian, who is currently fighting breast cancer and recommended chose Macmillan, which helps people diagnosed with cancer and their families, as his fundraising charity of choice.

"Cancer has affected nearly everyone's families at some time," he said. "It has also affected many members of my family including my grandma and grandfather on my mother's side as well as her sister Fran through to my dad and also his mother.

"Jemima Nicholas, like my sister and all my family, seems to have been a strong fighter so a perfect role model for the daily grinding battle against cancer," he added.
