CAREW Cheriton Control Tower is getting ready to host its annual Wings Over Carew festival over the weekend of August 6-7.

Now in its fourth year, the festival celebrates all things military with aviation history at its heart.

From 10am on Saturday and Sunday, you will be able to look around the many stalls and exhibits including a fine display of vintage armed vehicles, classic cars and motorbikes as well as all of the emergency services. The ever-so-popular static Spitfire will be returning to its prime location next to the control tower. This Spitfire has a complete original cockpit and a working Merlin engine which will be fired up during the event.

Also returning to the event will be the Red Devils, the British Army’s Parachute Regiment display team, with a display planned for both Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting and subject to operational duties).

Apart from the parachute displays there will be a packed programme, including the Welsh Army Reserves Transport Regiment, the ATC band and drill team, Fishguard Sea Cadets, Swansea pipe band and Welsh Tommies Re-enactment group.

On both Saturday and Sunday morning, there will be a short memorial service to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the wars. There will be a guard of honour, the British Legion and cadet bands with John Brock MBE receiving the salute on behalf of the control tower group. Renowned throughout Wales, the Royal Welsh Band will be making an appearance on Saturday. Taking part in the parade and Beating Retreat they are sure to be an amazing spectacle.

Carew Cheriton Control Tower is a derelict 2nd World War Air Traffic Control Tower which has been renovated to its original condition by a dedicated group of local people. As a thriving museum it is frequented by visitors from far and wide including groups of local school children as part of their historical studies.

Tickets to the Wings over Carew festival are priced £5 for adults, under 14s - £3 and free for children under 5.
