Fishguard went go-kart crazy on Saturday, as an enormous crowd cheered on a lucky 13 gravity powered vehicles in the town's first ever soapbox derby.

Fishguard and District Round Table, who organised the event, was overwhelmed by the amount of entries with carts coming in from as far afield as Swansea to tackle the hill-side course and jump.

Soapbox speed monitoring was carried out by local police community officer Carwyn Phillips with Black Rat from Maenclochog taking the trophy. Keeston Old Farmers won the best design award for their straw bale soapbox.

"It was brilliant. Much better than I could have imagined," said organiser Michael Annis. "When I started planning this 18 months ago I expected about five entries. To have 13 carts and hundreds of people watching was so much more than I could have hoped for.

"The quality of the carts made it for me. Some of them had obviously had months of preparation put into them."

Michael said he hoped the derby would become an annual event.

"There is definitely a demand for it," he said. "People were asking me on the day where they could sign up for next year."
