Ffos Las racing, Wimbledon tennis, and a real life Olympian – the 2016 St Davids Peninsula Carnival inadvertently took on a sporting theme this year on another highly successful day in Britain’s smallest city.

The day began with the local fire service hosting their annual open morning on the Cross Square – before the Milford Haven Town Band led the procession of floats and costumed individuals, travelling from Oriel-Y-Parc to St Davids Rugby Club, as large crowds lined the streets to offer their support.

Rhian Goodson and Libby Bland took the roles of Carnival Queen and Rose Queen respectively, and along with their attendants, were presented to the crowds at the Club before the competition judging commenced.

Judges for the day were Paul Edey, Canon Dorian Davies, the Lady of St Davids, Commanding Officer Mark Stoter –and then the Mayor of St Davids, Councillor Chris Taylor, and Team GB Women’s 7s player at the Olympic Games Jasmine Joyce, who were driven through the parade by Steve Lawton.

Penknife Club member Bill Preece oversaw proceedings on the microphone.

Also on hand at the club were bouncy castles, an assault course, a ‘Pimms’ tent, and a variety of fun stalls, as well as music from the Town Band and country and western singer Brian Mirza – while a prize raffle also took place with a top prize of £250.

The day then concluded with a series of fun running races for children and adults, and the Mayor himself hailed a ‘brilliant’ day.

“It was great to have Jasmine Joyce here and it’s been an excellent day,” said Cllr Taylor.

“I would like to see more floats again next year but all in all it has been a brilliant event.”

Main Carnival organiser Keeley Rose thanked everyone who had helped make the day a success.

“So many people have helped out today and a special thanks to my fellow members of the Carnival Committee, the judges, the sponsors, everyone who ran stalls and supported the day – and of course, everyone who dressed up to take part or helped organise the event in any way.

“We are always looking for new committee members with suggestions and ideas, and anyone interested in joining can contact me on 07808 863 658 or keelyrose@hotmail.co.uk.”
