Thirteen has proved to be a lucky number for Fishguard's Aberjazz Festival, as this year's event has attracted world-class acts and sell-out audiences.

The festival got off to a flying start last Thursday, with Jazz legend Courtney Pine playing to a packed Theatr Gwaun and getting the whole audience on its feet and dancing in the aisles.

"He went down an absolute bomb," said festival organiser, Paul Stonhold. "The feedback has been phenomenal."

This set the tone for the rest of the festival, with evening concerts in Ffwrn, Peppers and Theatre Gwaun selling out and afternoon concerts and workshops all very well-attended.

With this year's festival Aberjazz put on something for everyone of every interest and age with a stunning range of jazz, blues and soul as well as singing, dance, craft and music workshops.

Highlights are too numerous to mention, but mine included a full bodied and gutsy performance from the mesmerising Slowly Rolling Camera; mellifluous rising star Jasmine Power; local band the Stangs who played until their fingers blistered and the fabulous Tipitina who gave an inspirational workshop and a dynamic gig on Saturday.

"It's clearly been the best one we've had so far," said Paul. "It must be one of the friendliest and most family-friendly festivals. It's proving there is an awful lot of fun in Jazz. Everybody is smiling and enjoying themselves and the musicians all love coming to Fishguard.

"We're getting big stars and big names and I think we will be getting more in the future."
