Three young people from north Pembrokeshire are among eight lucky teenagers who last week set off on an unforgettable trip to Patagonia.

Tomos Salmon and Tomos Evans from Ysgol Bro Gwaun along with Ffion Philips from Ysgol y Preseli were picked from 80 applicants to represent west Wales on the Welsh youth organisation, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Patagonian adventure.

They will join 21other young people aged between 16 and 18 from all over Wales.

The group will spend two weeks in the Wladfa, during this time they will visit the Andes, the Parque Patagonia National Park, Porth Madryn and Buenos Aires.

During their time in South America the youngsters will spend time with local people of all ages, from elderly groups to young people and children in schools and colleges. They'll get to taste some Asado, host some concerts, a Cymanfa Ganu singing festival and a Noson Lawen entertainment evening. They will also compete in the Chubut Eisteddfod as individuals and as a choir.

"I am really looking forward to visiting a family friend who lives in Patagonia, and seeing the penguins in their natural habitat will be an unforgettable experience," said Ysgol y Preseli's Ffion Phillips.

Each successful applicant was expected to raise £2,400 by a variety of means in order to fund their Patagonia trip.

Tomos Salmon and Tomos Evans, from Fishguard School, raised funds by holding an afternoon tea, concerts, walks and a school non uniform day. They were also recipients of a Tim Noot memorial scholarship award.

The pupils are also taking £200 from Ysgol Bro Gwaun to give to the three schools they will visit in Patagonia

Sioned Hughes, Chief Executive of Urdd Gobaith Cymru added: "This autumn trip to Patagonia is the highlight of the Urdd's annual international activities, providing unforgettable experiences for young people from across Wales enabling them to expand their horizons, learn more about other countries, as well as educate other people about Wales and the Welsh language."
