TWO swans have been shot at Withybush Woods.

An adult female was killed and a baby cygnet had to be put down due to the extent of its injuries.

Two women discovered the body of the dead female in the rushes near the pond while walking in the woods last week.

The injuries are believed to have been caused by an air rifle.

The adult male and a second cygnet survived the attack but have been left traumatised, a wildlife charity has said.

Maria Evans, of Tinker's Hill Bird of Prey and Swan Rescue Centre the centre, was contacted by the walkers who found the birds.

Ms Evans said: “Last year, we had major problems with fishing tackle and that's just a bit of carelessness and neglect in not clearing up your fishing tackle, but this is just wanton, out and out cruelty."

Ms Evans said the police would be informed.

The incident has led to an outpouring of disgust on social media.

Posting on Facebook, Louise MacDonald said: “This news is shocking.”

Stephanie Dewick added: “What is wrong with people?”

The family of swans is understood to have lived in the woods for more than two years.

A flock of ducks which also lives in the pond in the woods is also said to have disappeared.

It is an offence to kill any swan in the UK.

Under UK law, all swans belong to Her Majesty, The Queen, under an ancient charter.

Anyone found guilty of harming swans can be prosecuted for criminal damage.

Swans are also protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
