A bench in memory of a much-loved Pembrokeshire lady has been dedicated at the home of Girlguiding in Wales.

Doreen Hammersley BEM of Tenby - who died earlier this year at the age of 89 - had been closely involved in Girlguiding since the 1930s.

She was a former county commissioner for Pembrokeshire and was vice president of Girlguiding Cymru.

Her friends in the Lower Landsker Trefoil Guild, which she founded, launched an appeal for a memorial bench to be sited at Broneirion in Powys.

"We were overwhelmed with the response," said guild secretary Nicole Evans.

"Doreen was a teacher, an artist, a country dancer, a Soroptimist and of course, a Guide, and so many people enjoyed her company and friendship and were inspired by her. She was truly a wonderful lady."

On Thursday, Guild members travelled to Broneirion where the bench was dedicated by the Pembrokeshire Girlguiding chaplain, Rev Marianne Osborne of Saundersfoot.

They were joined by one of Mrs Hammersley's granddaughters, Victoria, and great-granddaughter Millie, aged eight, who wore her Brownie uniform.

"Doreen loved it at Broneirion, and the bench is situated in a beautiful place overlooking the mountains," said Mrs Evans.

"It's a lovely thought that Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and leaders will be able to sit on Doreen's bench for years to come, and hopefully it will inspire in them the same zest for life as she had."

There are now plans for a second memorial bench to Mrs Hammersley, which will be sited on Tenby's Castle Hill.

Meanwhile, a Dance for Doreen to remember Mrs Hammersley will be held in Church House, Tenby on Friday.

Ceilidh dancing will be led by Pat and David Rye.
