Goodwick United Football Club have been awarded the 'freedom of Fishguard and Goodwick' after their historic treble winning exploits last season.

The Phoenix Boys received the honour from Fishguard Town Council last (Monday) night, in a special presentation held at the Phoenix Centre.

Last season (2015/16), the club became the first ever in Pembrokeshire to win the West Wales Intermediate Cup, Senior Cup, and Division One league in the same season.

Nigel Delaney's side kick defeated Hakin United 2-1 in the Senior Cup final at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium, before going on to beat Morriston Olympic by the same scoreline at the Liberty Stadium in the West Wales Cup final.

Then they completed their historic campaign by winning the Division One title on the final day of the league season, after a 1-1 draw at The Obs against runners up Hakin.

As a result, Councillor Belinda Davies put forward to Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council, that the club be awarded the freedom of the towns, in celebration of their achievements.

Her proposal was backed by fellow councillors, and on Monday, the Mayor of Fishguard and Goodwick, Councillor Mike Mayberry, acknowledged the club's tremendous achievements, and also the dedication and commitments of the supporting heroes behind the club - namely the parents, the club committee, the linesmen and the groundsmen.

He added the club has made a significant and positive impact upon the youth in the area and is highly regarded.
