The name of the new 3-11 primary school for the Angle peninsula has been proposed as ‘Penrhyn Church in Wales Voluntary Controlled School’.

The name has been proposed by the school’s temporary governing body following suggestions made by children from Angle, Orielton and Stackpole schools.

It reflects the fact that the new school will serve a wide area – ‘Penrhyn’ is Welsh for ‘peninsula’.

The name will be formally determined by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet at a future date.

Construction work on the new school has recently started, and Cllr David Lloyd, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “I’m thrilled to witness the start of this hugely important educational provision for children in this area, which I am certain will contribute towards them achieving their full potential.”

Angle, Orielton and Stackpole primary schools will close at the end of the summer term in 2017 and it was intended that pupils transferred to the new Penrhyn School at Hundleton in September 2017.

However, due to a delay in work starting on site, all pupils will spend one term at Penrhyn School at the Stackpole site, from September to December 2017.

In a letter to parents, Director for Children and Schools Kate Evan-Hughes said: “I acknowledge that this is not the ideal start to a new school and that the site (Stackpole) was not suitable for the new school, but it is only a short term measure and allows the school to operate with its new staffing structure with all staff and pupils on one site.”

“Your child will therefore receive his/her education at the Stackpole site from September 2017 before transferring to the new school premises in Hundleton at the beginning of January 2018.”

Arrangements will be put in place to fund the transport of pupils to Stackpole for the duration of the term.

Mrs Evan-Hughes continued: “I would like to wish your child every success for the future at the new school and despite the short delay, I am sure that pupils and staff alike will benefit from their new school environment.”

Cllr David Lloyd added: “I am aware that the enforced delay in the opening of the new school may cause some difficulties – however, I can assure everyone that every effort will be made to minimise them.”

W.R.W. has been appointed as the main contractors for the construction of the new school.
