THE second of two vibrant new trail leaflets was launched on Saturday November 19 during the Pembroke Town Walls Trust’s Link Hands around the Walls event, which saw more than 500 people join hands around the historic town walls.

Junior History Detectives takes children around the town to find out about Pembroke’s heritage and history with help from Tudor ap Dragon.

From looking for fossils in the walls of buildings, seeking out the Babaloobie, learning the dangers of standing under castle garderobes, and who Ernie Finch was, the leaflet is packed with games, fun and facts which can be enjoyed by all ages.

The first leaflet, Pembroke Nature Trail, uses the same map to guide walkers on a fascinating wildlife trail of the Commons, Millponds and river with something for every season of the year.

The content and text of both leaflets has been written and co-ordinated by Nikki Anderson of the Pembroke Story project, and members of the Town Heritage and Environment Group, a sub-group of Pembroke 21C Community Association, with valuable help from the children of Golden Grove Community School.

“There was a very enthusiastic reaction from the children who took part in the first walk”, said Nikki Anderson.

“The guns, old pictures and smells were marked as especially ‘cool’. Pembroke is an amazing place,” she continued. “It is full of fascinating history, stunning heritage sites and is alive with wildlife and biodiversity. Telling the town’s story in this way has been a delight and we hope that local people and visitors will use both the leaflets to enjoy the town and spend time here.”

Funded by Awards for All Wales, the leaflets are both centred round an innovative and colourful map of the town designed by Lisa Hellier of Art House Graphics. Tudor ap Dragon is the work of Ben Chaple-Perrie.

Both leaflets are free and are available from Foundry House Community Centre on Pembroke Commons.
