An “obviously drunken” Haverfordwest man has been found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to a complete stranger.

Darren John Connolly, aged 32, ran downhill towards Nigel Hewitt and punched him so hard in the face that he broke his cheekbone.

Surgeons who operated on Mr Hewitt for six hours to reconstruct his face later told him he had been hit by “a 60mph punch.”

Connolly, of Turberville House, High Street, denied the offence but was convicted unanimously after a short trial at Swansea crown court.

The jury heard that an initial confrontation had been filmed on CCTV cameras.

Mr Hewitt, aged 53, of Dew Street, could be seen with a friend inside a kebab shop on High Street.

As he left at 3am on August 15, 2015, a bare chested Connolly appeared on screen and pushed Mr Hewitt into the road.

Mr Hewitt told the jury he thought Connolly was just a “drunken fool” and walked towards his home.

But Connolly caught up with him and ran past before turning and running back down High Street towards Mr Hewitt.

As he drew level he punched him once in the face before running away.

Mr Hewitt was taken to Swansea’s Morriston hospital where surgeons inserted metal plates and screws into his cheek.

“It is taking time to get over the attack,” he told the jury.

After his arrest Connolly claimed he had complained after seeing Mr Hewitt urinating in an alleyway and that Mr Hewitt had thrown the first punch and he had then hit out in self defence.

Mr Hewitt told the court that was rubbish.

Connolly will be sentenced on January 3 after a probation officer has prepared a report into his background.
