The head teacher of Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, Irwyn Wilcox, has been dismissed following an allegation of gross misconduct, Pembrokeshire County Council has confirmed today (Monday).

“At a hearing of the Staff Disciplinary and Dismissal Appeals Committee of the Governing body of Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, Fishguard, held on 13th and 14th December, one allegation of gross misconduct was upheld against the headteacher, Irwyn Wilcox, and the decision was made that he should be dismissed,” said a council spokesman.

“This concludes the statutory process.”

Parents of children at the school were sent a letter about the dismissal on Friday (December 16) from the vice chair of the governing body, Rachael Bean.

Mr Wilcox had been suspended from his duties at the school since November 2015. The council confirmed that current temporary management arrangements at the school will continue until permanent arrangements can be put in place.

“This means Mr Williams will continue in his role of acting head teacher,” said the letter to parents.

“This has been an unsettling period for the school community,” read a joint statement for the governing body and the county council.

“The local authority, governing body and staff now look forward to working together in the future in the best interests of the school.”

The letter to parents explained why the school had been unable to provide them with more information earlier.

“I am aware that many have been frustrated by the lack of information that has been provided,” it reads.

“But it has been essential to maintain confidentially to all involved..The support of parents is, as always, most appreciated.”

The council has said that no more information as to the dismissal will be provided at this time.

The Western Telegraph understands the case will now be referred to the Education Workforce Council.
