A series of meetings to inform patients of changes at Goodwick Surgery will take place next month, as Hywel Dda University Health Board reassures patients that medical provision continue in the town.

The surgery was taken over by the health board after the retirement of Dr Van Kempen in March 2015. Last November its GP, Dr Kate Mathias, announced she was resigning. She finished at the surgery last month and the practice is currently using locum GP cover.

A spokesman for Hywel Dda UHB said it been working with the surgery to seek alternative ways of working to provide a better model of healthcare.

February’s public engagement events will also provide an opportunity for patients to raise any questions they may have. The changes introduced at the surgery include a new multi-disciplinary team working alongside the GP practice team from March 2017.

This team could include an occupational therapist, a social worker, a pharmacist, a community mental health support worker, an advanced paramedic practitioner and a physiotherapist.

Patients may see any of the new practitioners or the GP, and it is hoped that this will improve access to the most appropriate clinician.

“We are committed to developing an improved, integrated and more sustainable model for the practice in order to improve standards of care for patients,” said Elaine Lorton, assistant director of primary care.

“To this end we would like to reassure people that the provision of general medical services will continue in this area.”
