The community of Fishguard and Goodwick enjoyed an evening of music, drama and poetry last Saturday, January 21, during the twin town’s annual Hen Galan concert.

The bilingual event, which is now in its sixth year, was held at St Peter's Church Goodwick and raised funds for three local charities: Cwtch Pembrokeshire, which supports young adults with long term or chronic physical health conditions; Crossroads carer support service and the newly opened Rainbow Cancer Support Centre in Fishguard.

A retiring collection was held at the end of the evening and, despite smaller audience numbers than in previous years, £800 was raised.

The evening included a number of musical contributions from Goodwick Brass Band and Cor Abergwaun.

Ysgol Bro Gwaun students Phebe Salmon and Mefin Hughes recited Welsh poetry , Ysgol Llanyllwydog pupils performed a drama fach and Goodwick School’s three kings, Wil Thomas, Owain Williams and Matthew Butler took the collection.

Prose readings were given by Fishguard and Goodwick Soroptimists and from the WI. Poems were read by the Round Table and the Ladies Circle. Mayor, Mike Mayberry, gave a vote of thanks.

The concert is a joint initiative, organised by ten local organisations. The Rotary, Round Table, Lions, Soroptomists, Tangent, 41 Club, WI Merched y Wawr and Cymorodian. Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council also provided funding to cover the costs of the event.

“Watching and listening to the performances was a real tonic,” said joint chairman Hedydd Hugfhes.

“The night was extremely enjoyable and we thank all those including the mayor and church officials, who helped to make the evening a success.”
