Crowds of people gave colour to the official opening of Fishguard's Rainbow Cancer Support Centre on Saturday.

Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn cut the ribbon of the centre, which houses therapy and reflection rooms, a communal sitting area and kitchen. It is open to people in Pembrokeshire with cancer, their families and carers.

The centre aims to offer complementary therapies, yoga, workshops, counselling, information and advice for those diagnosed with cancer, their families and carers, as well as being just a quiet place to pop into relax and have a cup of tea or coffee.

"This is something that is going to be a real jewel in to the county and to local people," said the actor who lost his own father to cancer 14 years ago.

"There will be community support, support from local therapists, love and positive support. It's a great thing. Everybody's lives have been touched by cancer at some time. I think the centre will be also be important to those who have things to give of themselves. It's a great part of community life."

The centre is the brainchild of Fishguard grandmother, Yvonne Pye, who was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer a year ago.

The 55-year-old has been given the old solicitor's office in West Street, Fishguard, for a peppercorn rent. Together with a band of willing and committed volunteers she has transformed the building into a warm and welcoming place.

"I am overwhelmed by the number of people that have turned up today," she said. "It is so lovely and having Jerome here has been brilliant.

"It's just been fantastic the response we've had from members of the community and different groups. We are now officially open and I hope people will pop in and see what we are about."

The Rainbow Cancer Support Centre is in West Street, Fishguard, on Tuesdays Wednesdays or Thursdays between 10 am and 4pm. For more information see the Facebook page.
