Fishguard and Goodwick's Communities Together project formally winds down this week, but the organisers have made clear that they are far from shutting up shop.

The three-year project was funded by the Big Lottery Fund, and generated a range of activities, many of which are set to continue.

"Communities Together has been organised by the charity Alcohol Concern, but it's always been about so much more than drinking. We've been proud to be able to bring so many different people together and to showcase so many local talents – from making excellent food and drink to playing heavy metal music," said project manager Marc Mordey.

"By pitching in with so many positive activities, we've provided a safe space for people to talk and think about alcohol – about how and why we drink, and whether we might want to cut back sometimes – with no preaching or judgement.

"Above all, we've shown that there's a lot of energy and ability round here, and a real willingness to help each other out and get things done."

The future activities that look set to keep the spirit of Communities Together alive in the twin towns include the ongoing work to improve playgrounds around the twin towns, and big plans to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the French Invasion.

It's even led to the establishment of a new micro-business, Mel's Mocktails, set up by local young entrepreneur Melanie Murphy to provide great alcohol-free cocktails for all occasions.

The project has also highlighted some real needs in the local community, and has sparked new ventures to meet those needs. One thing that's come to light is the need for support for people whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else's drinking – be that a partner, friend or family member. Al-Anon Family Groups provided a confidential space where people share their own experiences of living with alcoholism, and give each other understanding, strength and hope.
