PEMBROKESHIRE Coast National Park Authority Members have agreed a package to support the bid for St Davids and the Hundred of Dewisland to be named the UK City of Culture in 2021.

The bid, which is being led by Pembrokeshire County Council and St Davids City Council alongside a partnership of organisations and businesses, was formally launched last month.

At a meeting on Wednesday March 29, Members agreed to endorse the Authority’s formal role as a key partner in the bid and also approved a package of financial support and in-kind contributions worth £15,000 for the first stage of the bidding process, with a contribution of more than £500,000 if the bid is successful.

National Park Authority Chief Executive, Tegryn Jones said: “This bid represents a significant opportunity to showcase the cultural diversity of North West Pembrokeshire and the National Park to the rest of the UK and to the world.

“The National Park and the work of the Authority have a pivotal role to play in the success of the bid and the associated benefits that the successful bid would bring to businesses and communities across Pembrokeshire should not be underestimated.”

The Pembrokeshire bid is one of eleven from across the United Kingdom with seven from England, two from Scotland and one other from Wales.

The Stage I application must be submitted to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport by April 28.

Shortlisted applicants will need to submit a full and final bid by September 29 and the winner will be announced in December.
