POINT Young Persons' Trust has secured £447,000 of Big Lottery funding for a three year intergenerational project in the Fishguard area.

The POINT Across Communities (PAC) project aims to bridge the generation gap by actively promoting and encouraging young people to embrace companionship and support from older members of the community.

The project will bring together older and younger members of the community through a mentoring project and through intergenerational days out and events.

The idea is that young people will learn new skills from older members of the community but will also give a bit back via sharing ICT skills and helping set up initiatives such as dementia aware living history projects.

Zoe Davies, General Manager said that the People and Places grant will enable POINT to continue and expand upon the success of the previous Big Lottery funded project PONT Means Jobs but with the added dimension of bringing the generations together.

"There will be much more focus on intergenerational working as a means to skill people up," she said.

"We are looking to recruit older people as mentors for both employability skills and life skills. People don't have extended families or grandparents around as much anymore. The idea is to make the community a bit more cohesive and a better place to live for the future.

"We are incredibly lucky to have got a fourth round of Big Lottery funding," said Zoe. "It will cover 70 percent of our services.

"Our drop in sessions act as a lead in to PAC so it means the whole organisation will benefit."

POINT is appealing to older people and young people from the local community who have spare time and could offer their time to volunteer for PAC.
