AN epic challenge involving one boy with Spina Bifida, eight teams to carry him in relay, and 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is taking place at weekends up to July 8.

The challenge is aimed at giving eight-year-old Delton from Pembroke the experience of a lifetime whilst saying a little thank you to organisations who have helped him survive and thrive this far.

The organising group of The Delton Challenge is walking the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path over a series of eight weekends, accompanied by a different team each weekend.

Each team will take a share in helping carrying Delton (who has no feeling or use below his waist) all 186 miles of the coast path.

It’s not just the length that will be a challenge, there’s more ascent on the path than climbing Everest.

Delton who weighs 23 kilograms, more than three-and-a-half stones, will be carried in a special baby carrier during the walk.

Tarryn Williams, Delton’s mum, said: “The idea came about whilst discussing the best way we could get out with the children to visit as many of our wonderful beaches without a wheelchair. We then discussed the coastal path and the idea came from there. Delton is a cheeky eight-year-old boy who lights up a room.

“He’s had a really tough start in life but has pulled through to be the wonderful boy he is today. Delton was in and out of hospital for the majority of the start of his life and after a few years on Ward 9, Withybush Hospital he was finally allowed home.

“I wanted to raise money for the Puffin Ward as a thank you for the care that Delton had by the wonderful Doctors and Nurses on the ward.”

There are roughly 30 people involved in the whole walk.

The Delton Challenge group is fundraising for three different charities – The Children’s Ward at Withybush Hospital, Shine (a National Spina Bifida Charity) and Cross Roads Care (a National charity for carers).

To date, more than £1,200 has been raised.
