AN 18-year-old from Fishguard has won a gold medal in the ICT final of a national skills competition.

Gwen Evans, who is studying a level two vocational studies diploma, competed against students from across Wales in a series of ICT challenges. The competitors were tasked with creating a word processed document demonstrating different types of fonts and inserting images all in just 90 minutes.

The inclusive skills competition, part of Skills Competitions Wales, are designed to help equip young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities with essential life learning and employability skills for the future.

Pembrokeshire College student Gwen said she couldn't believe it when the judges announced her as the winner.

"I was confident going into the competition, having practised at college with my tutor and being used to working on computers at home," she said.

"I've been interested in ICT since my Dad bought me a laptop two years ago. I really enjoy typing, and in my spare time I write love stories and plays on the computer.

"Taking part in Skills Competition Wales has boosted my confidence and has made my family proud of me, especially as I've never won a competition before.

"I've been able to develop my IT skills further, as well as test my time management skills and work under pressure which I know will help me in the future where I'm hoping to study further and train to become a childminder."

Minister for Skills and Science, Julie James added:

"Along with Gwen's hard work and determination, the support from her family is an important factor in her success, and I would like to extend a special thank you to all the local businesses, schools and colleges across Wales who support these talented individuals.

"I would like to congratulate Gwen on her fantastic achievement and wish her the best of luck in her future career."
