Emergency services have been called to a popular swimming spot at Newcastle Emlyn, following reports of a man in his twenties who is believed to have fallen into the river from Bridge Street.

Dyfed-Powys Police is coordinating the search and say the man's next of kin are aware of the situation. Police attended the scene at 12.33pm and are still there, along with fire, ambulance, RAF search and rescue helicopter conducting a search of the river.

The emergency response is centered on the area below the bridge near Teifi Terrace on the outskirts of the town. It is apparently a popular spot for locals to go swimming.

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, said:

“The river bends at that point and it is very deep and you can never be sure what the current is like beneath the surface.”

Two ambulances, a paramedic in a rapid response car and the Wales Air Ambulance were called to the scene. The air ambulance has subsequently been stood down.

Fire crews from Newcastle Emlyn, Llandysul and two specialist water rescue units from Carmarthen and Aberystwyth are also in attendance.

The fire service had the call shortly before midday to say there was a person in the water. Crews are currently searching the area.

Eyewitness reports from the river bank say there is also a police helicopter hovering above the river, a fire rescue boat on the river and a large police and fire service presence in the town.

Police and fire crews were using a boat to search the river, while a police dog was combing the banks. A drone was also being used to scour the area.

The area has been sealed off by police.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We were called at approximately 12.25pm this afternoon (Thursday 6 July) to reports of a person in the water in the River Teifi in Newcastle Emlyn.

“The Wales Air Ambulance, two crews in emergency ambulances and a paramedic in a rapid response car are currently at the scene.”
