POLICE and Network Rail engineers are currently at the scene of a road accident in south Pembrokeshire where a lorry has hit a railway bridge.

The incident on the A4139 between Penally and Lydstep occurred just before Crackwell Bridge where there is a narrow bend in the road.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police were called to the A4139 just after 11am to a report that a lorry had collided with a bridge."

The railway line over the bridge is on the Tenby to Pembroke Dock line, and train drivers have been instructed to proceed with caution in the short term.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "We are inspecting the bridge for any damage that may have been caused. The first train over the bride following the collision ran at 5mph, and subsequent trains over the next couple of hours will proceed at 20mph. There are no service cancellations."
